Mother’s Day is almost here. Now, that I’m a mom, and maybe even a semi veteran mom. 🤔
Hmm, I wonder if having an 8 and 10 year old, make me an experienced mom.
Well, anyway, point being, now that I’ve been a mom for a while, I can tell you that Mother’s Day has probably never not one time been special enough to pay your mom back for all she’s done.
I’ve found over and over, that moms give their all to their kids. They pour their heart and soul into their babies. Sometimes literally. Nursing alone is still to date the most selfless thing I’ve ever done. And there’s really no gift that can be given to make it all worth while. I mean, for heaven’s sake, please try, because mom deserves it. But the rewards are the memories in our heart, the way it forever changes us, makes us softer, but also infinitely more tough at the same time.
There are tons of cute handmade gift ideas that kids make for their moms for Mother’s Day. Anyone else have a flower pot made from their kids hand prints? 😆 All of the “art projects” moms are supposed to save can become overwhelming, if you’re a minimalist like… but edible art, I’m in. Also photo books for all those art projects!
And while it can be done in a classy way. I feel like this activity has the potential to be cute, heartfelt, AND yummy.
Mother’s Day Cookies
I love to bake WAYYY more than I love to craft. So, this activity is where baking and crafting meet.
Bake cookies that say a meaningful name of the mom or grandma (Mama, Gigi, Mimi, Nana, MeeMaw) in your life, and let the kids decorate them!! Or if you don’t have any kids (if you are the kid 😆), then just make them really pretty. I feel like this would be really darling as cupcakes, but way more complicated. These cookies are about 2.5 inches, but would be cute even a couple inches bigger as well. You can shop cookie cutter options here.
Mother’s Day Cookie Recipe
I used a Wilton no chill recipe for this one, because I wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t spread. This recipe was a gem.
1 cup unsalted butter
1 1⁄2 cups granulated sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 3⁄4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
(Or half the recipe like I did, for less cookies).
-Cream butter and sugar. Add the vanilla and egg, and mix til incorporated.
-Add flour, baking powder and salt until incorporated.
– Mine was piecey, then I used my hands and shaped it into a ball.
-Flour the counter top
-Roll it out, and cut out your cookies.
-I baked the letters for 5 min at 350° and the hearts and flowers for 8 min.
You can see a video of the process here.
Let the babies (or yourself) decorate and enjoy! I share one of my favorite glossy sugar cookie icings on Pinterest here.
